CROSS COUNTRY: The Westminster men's and women's cross country teams will begin the 2010 season this weekend. The Griffins will compete in the Montana State Invitational at Bozeman, Mont., on Saturday. The race will be held at Bridger Golf Course and be a 5-mile race for the men and a 3-mile race for the women.
The Westminster men's cross country team is led by returners David Sondrup and Romnick Poindexter. Sondrup competed in three events last season and finished 32nd at the Frontier Conference Championships with his time of 30:32. Poindexter ran in four events last season and was 52nd at the Frontier Conference Championships. Tyler Gregg also competed in the conference meet and placed 26th with his time of 30:03.
The team welcomes five newcomers to the team for 2010.
Cassie Mulkey and Allison Perkins return to anchor the Westminster women's cross country team in 2010. Mulkey ran in three events in 2009 and ran a personal-best 22:57 at the Carroll College Invitational. She also placed 40th at the Frontier Conference Championships with her 24:13 time. Perkins only ran at the conference meet and finished 47th with a time of 26:55. The women's team will welcome six newcomers to the team in 2010.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: The Westminster volleyball team plays at home for the first time in three weeks when they welcome Montana Western and Montana
Tech to the Behnken Field House this week. Montana Western will face Westminster on Thursday at 7 p.m., with Montana Tech coming in on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Westminster enters the week at 4-6 overall and 0-2 in the Frontier Conference. They dropped two road games to open conference action last week at Rocky Mountain and Carroll. After jumping into the top 25 last week, Westminster fell out of the rankings and are among the others receiving votes in the 33rd position.
Clotile Harris leads the team with 140 kills and her 4.24 kills per set is first in the Frontier. Stephanie Jones leads the squad with her .285 hitting efficiency to go with eight service aces and 28 blocks. Emily Atkinson ranks second in the conference with an average of 9.18 assists per set. Kyndall Kordakis leads the team with 146 digs and Kative Vance leads everyone with 33 blocks.
MEN'S SOCCER: The Westminster men's soccer team hits the road for the first time in 2010 with three games in three days in the state of Kansas. Westminster opens with Mid America Nazarene on Friday at Olathe, Kan. The Griffins then visit Baldwin City, Kan., on Saturday for a game against Baker University. The trip concludes in Salina, Kan., against No. 21 Kansas Wesleyan on Sunday.
