Undefeated matchups

The number of unbeaten teams was whittled from 23 to 17 – still, an unusually high number for the four-week mark of the season. Three reside in Region 7 alone, Timpanogos, Timpview and Westlake. Just two games pit undefeated teams this week.

Olympus at East – this contest has implications not only for the Region 6 championship, but also for a home playoff game and, most importantly, a postseason berth. Only three teams from loaded Region 6 are guaranteed a playoff spot. A fourth team will qualify if the second place of the three 4A teams – Dixie, Pine View and Snow Canyon – in Region 9 doesn't finish in at least third of all Region 9 teams. With 3A Hurricane and Cedar undefeated, one of the three Class 4A teams ending up lower than third is a distinct possibility.

San Juan at South Summit, although a region opener, is likely the 2A East championship game. Both should get a first round bye in the playoffs and home field advantage in quarterfinals. San Juan has allowed just two touchdowns in four games, and one of those was a kick return. South Summit is winning its contests by 30.3 points per game.

A little more on these two games later.

The number of winless teams dropped from 20 to 12, but there are no matchups of winless schools.

Top Starts

Two Utah County schools with 4-0 records are experiencing best starts: Timpanogos, in its 15th season and Westlake in its second. Riverton, also 4-0, has matched its best-ever start of 2005.

Also, Beaver (4-0) has already matched its win total from the '09 season and if the Beavers defeat Millard, they'll be 5-0 for the first time since 1992. … A Cedar win over Pine View may not be easy – the Panthers have taken five of the past six from Cedar – but the Redmen would then be 5-0 for the first time since an 8-0 start in 1980. … Northridge is looking to go 5-0 for the first time since 2004, Morgan, for the first time since 2005, and Davis for the first time since 2006.

In addition, two coaches in their first year at their current school remain undefeated: Ed Larsen at Timpanogos and Josh Lyman at Cottonwood, which is the only team with a bye this week.

Beyond the Border

Canyon View at Boulder City, Nev. is the last matchup with an out-of-state team. Utah is 19-7 vs. non-Utah competition this season.
