Kellogg's FiberPlus Antioxidants Cereal. Berry Yogurt Crunch, and Cinnamon Oat Crunch. $3.99 per 11.5- to 15.3-ounce box.
Bonnie: Both of Kellogg's new FiberPlus Antioxidants Cereal boxes boast 35 to 40 percent of your daily fiber requirement. This may make it sound like both are chock-full of grains, but only the Cinnamon Oat Crunch actually gets its fiber from oats. The Berry Yogurt Crunch's fiber comes mainly from added chicory root.
The Cinnamon Oat Crunch is also a slightly better choice in other ways, as it contains a mere 1.5 grams fat, only 140 milligrams sodium and a substantial 9 grams total fiber for a three-quarters cup of cereal. The Berry version is loaded with additives.
I only wish the Cinnamon Oat Crunch tasted better. Its light cinnamon flavor is unfortunately overwhelmed by a harsh, burnt-spice aftertaste.
Carolyn: Kellogg's FiberPlus Antioxidant snack bars won our Golden Shopping Cart Award for best new product of 2009. No wonder Kellogg's was happy for us to check out these two new FiberPlus cereals, Kellogg's latest attempt to wrest market share from General Mills Fiber One.
Like General Mills' original Fiber One, these two new FiberPlus products are cereals. That and high fiber content are where the resemblance between the two product lines ends. The original General Mills Fiber One cereal resembles Kellogg's pellet-like All-Bran Buds; subsequent Fiber One cereal varieties imitate Raisin Bran flakes and Shredded Wheat "bales" — whereas FiberPlus Berry Yogurt Crunch cereal is a sweetened flake cereal and the Cinnamon Oat Crunch variety resembles Apple Cinnamon Cheerios.
I liked the Cinnamon Oat Crunch a lot more than the Berry Yogurt Crunch, which was undistinguished and too sweet. Neither, unfortunately, is as stand-out wonderful as Kellogg's award-winning FiberPlus Antioxidant bars.
Fresh Express Artisanal Salads. Sierra Crisp Herb, and Wild Rocket Zest. $3.99 per 4-ounce bag.
Bonnie: These two new artisanal salads contain more unusual greens than are typically found in packaged salads. They include wild rocket, tatsoi and mizuna. The rocket is a wild variety of arugula; the tatsoi and mizuna are similar to mild mustard greens. What's even more interesting: The exact herbs in the Sierra Crisp Herb and the dark greens in the Wild Rocket Zest will change seasonally.
