Utah Utes football: It's a Jordan Wynn-win situation for Ute signal-callers

SALT LAKE CITY — Granted, it's not a two-headed monster like BYU has at quarterback. Utah, though, does have a pair of signal callers who have made an impact this season.

Starter Jordan Wynn led the Utes to a season-opening victory over Pittsburgh, and backup Terrance Cain did the same in last Saturday's win over UNLV.

It remains to be seen who'll get the nod this weekend when the 14th-ranked Utes (2-0, 1-0) visit struggling New Mexico (0-2, 0-0). Wynn is still considered "day-to-day" with a thumb sprain on his throwing hand.

"We're just relying on the medical staff to make that determination," said Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. "We'll just have to see how things progress this week in practice. I can't give you a solid answer right now."

If Wynn is once again unavailable, Whittingham and the Utes have "complete confidence" in Cain to get the job done. The senior is 8-1 as a starter at Utah.

In the win over the Rebels, Cain completed 13-of-20 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns. He wasn't intercepted or sacked.

"What he did in that game Saturday is exactly what we expected him to do," Whittingham said while noting how much improvement Cain has made in the past year. "He quietly went about his business and did a very nice job managing the offense."

Cain, however, downplayed his performance.

"I always can play better," he said. "But we got the win and that's all that matters."

It's the only statistic that Cain is concerned about.

"I just go out and play. I don't really look at the stats," he explained. "I just go out there and play and do what I can."

Despite losing the starting job to Wynn after eight games last season, Cain has continued to work hard.

"We prepare the same way as if we're both going to start," Cain said. "We can't let this team down. So us being prepared is key."

It's an approach Wynn appreciates.

"We have the utmost faith in Terrance," he said while noting that Cain had a strong spring and a solid fall camp. "It kind of feels good knowing that the team is in good hands when he's in."

There's no animosity between the quarterbacks. They watch film together and back one another.

"We support each other. Like I've said, we're like a family. It doesn't matter who's in or who's out," Cain said. "We just want to win. We're just trying to reach our goal."
