MEN'S SOCCER: The 17th-ranked Griffins won for the third consecutive outing with a 1-0 defeat of Point Loma Nazarene on Friday evening on Dumke Field. The Griffins (4-1) got a goal from Dennis Sellis in the seventh minute and then held on for the victory.
Westminster, who was playing as a ranked team for the first time since 2007, took the early advantage when Sellis collected a cross from Jonathan Parker inside the box and fired it past PLNU (2-1) keeper Keith Cline for the game's only tally. For Sellis, it was his fourth goal of the season and his third game winner.
The Griffins outshot the visitors 11-9 in the game and put four of those 11 shots on frame. They missed a few other opportunities as the game progressed, including a header from Sellis in the 40th minute and a blast just wide by Wilson Larson in the 72nd minute. PLNU had a goal disallowed by an offside call in the 88th minute.
Sellis and Larson each attempted three shots for the Griffins while Nic Duncan recorded two. The assist by Parker was his team leading second of the year. Damir Sabanovic picked up his second consecutive shutout with four saves. Sabanovic hasn't allowed a goal in his last 243 minutes of action between the pipes.
Westminster will return to action on Saturday when they host Sterling College on Dumke Field. First kick is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
