PROVO — Between Westlake's defense and John Ursua's legs, Friday night was a long one for the Provo Bulldogs.
The winning combination gave Westlake a decisive 38-24 win over the Bulldogs to move the Thunder to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in region play.
The Thunder slowed a Provo offense that has been averaging over 31 points per game while Ursua ran for 186 yards on 18 carries, scoring four touchdowns and throwing for two more.
"We're right where we want to be," said Westlake coach Jason Walker. "For the most part, our defense played great. Our second crew gave up a couple of scores late, but for the most part our defense controlled the game."
Westlake scored on its opening possession, driving 80 yards on 10 plays. Ursua ran it in from the five to put the Thunder ahead 7-0.
After intercepting a Trevor Zibetti pass at the Provo 32, Westlake quickly scored again on a 15 yard Ursua run to push the lead to 13-0 less than five minutes into the game.
Ursua then connected with Brandon Aldstadt on an 11-yard pass play with only 17 seconds remaining in the first quarter to increase the lead to 20-0.
Provo responded with a 90-yard kick-off return by Keoki Unufe for the Bulldogs only touchdown of the first half.
The halftime score of 20-9 was as close as the Bulldogs would get as Westlake came out and scored three times in the third quarter to take a commanding 38-9 lead. Ursua ran for 15- and 66-yard touchdowns sandwiched around a 2-yard touchdown pass to Moana Ofahengaue.
"John is a great competitor, said Walker. "He made a lot of things happen tonight with his legs. The first three games he was really moving the ball with his arm. Tonight they sat back in coverage, and he took advantage of that with his legs."
Provo moves to 2-2 on the year and 0-1 in region play.
