WOMEN'S GOLF: Utah Valley University golfers Jordyn Dougal and Beverly Pike carded six-over 77s in leading the Wolverines to a third-place finish at the Wildcat Invitational Friday at the Davis Park Golf Course in Fruit Heights, Utah.
As a team, the Wolverines finished with a 311, four shots behind second-place Weber State and seven shots behind winner Southern Utah. Idaho State finished at 331.
Dougal, a sophomore from San Antonio, was 1-under on the par 3s in the season's opening tournament.
Stephanie Fox (78) and Abbie Archibald (79) also shot in the 70s for the Wolverines. Playing as individuals, Monica Fox and Celeste Gish carded rounds of 80 on the par-71 course.
Weber State's Kelsey Adams won the tournament with a 2-over 73.
The Wolverines travel to Bozeman, Mont., Sept 7-8 for the Bobcat Invitational.
CROSS COUNTRY: Utah Valley University's Josh McCabe finished two seconds off the course record Friday in winning the Wyoming Invitational with the time of 21 minutes, 44 seconds at Laramie, Wyo.
On the women's side, freshman Kodi Kleven recorded a time of 14:56.2 in finishing fifth in the 2.5-mile women's race.
Overall, the UVU men finished third with 53 points, just two points behind second-place Wyoming, while the women finished second with 47 points behind Colorado State (20).
"I think comparing ourselves to last year we are getting close to where we were," UVU cross country coach Scott Houle said. "We changed our workouts a bit and we're setting ourselves up to be better in the future."
All five UVU men's runners finished in the top 19. Behind McCabe, Spencer Evensen finished in the top 10 in eighth with the time of 22:29.9. Jared Keller (11th, 22:41.6), Logan Petty (14th, 23:07.5) and Trevor Baker (19th, 23:56.2) rounded out UVU's top 5.
"We had some kids step in that we weren't expecting right now," Houle said. "On the guys' side, they did a great job."
Houle was pleased with the women's finishes of fifth, ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th.
Three UVU women's placed in the top 10. Behind Kleven, Shelise Walker and Aleina Winger finished ninth and 10th, respectively, with times of 15:11.9 and 15:16.6. Krystal Harper and Jessica Wilding were 11th and 12th with respective times of 15:20.7 and 15:24.9.
