WOMEN'S GOLF: Sue Nyhus isn't shy when it comes to her expectations for the 2010-11 Wolverines.
"We're taking a look at our school records and we're hoping to break a few. If we're breaking school records it means we are playing good golf," said Nyhus, who is in her first year at UVU after spending 11 seasons at BYU. "There is a lot of enthusiasm on the team and a lot of excitement about what we can do, where we can go and how much better we can get this season."
The Wolverines return five players from the 2009-10 team, including Abbie Archibald and Monica Fox, who both notched a pair of Top-5 finishes in tournaments last year, as well as Stephanie Fox, Stacey Parkinson and Morgan Workman. Also, the Wolverines have newcomers in Jordyn Dougal, Celeste Gish, Beverly Pike, Clarissa Reid and former UVU basketball player Julie Smith.
Monica Fox, who is a twin sister to Stephanie Fox, is second in the UVU record books with a low round of 75, while Parkinson and Archibald, who has been with the program for four years, have career-bests of 76. Monica Fox also holds the school record at 235 after 54 holes.
"I told each of them to be a leader in their own way," Nyhus said. "I'm looking for leadership from everyone, not just the seniors."
Utah Valley opens the season Friday at the Wildcat Invitational at Davis Park Golf Course in Fruit Heights. The tournament tees off at 10:30 a.m.
"It's a great warm-up tournament because a lot of our players are familiar with the course," Nyhus said. "We want to shoot low scores and gain some confidence before going out on our first trip."
Following the 18-hole event Friday the Wolverines will travel to the Bobcat Invitational in Bozeman, Mont., on Sept. 7-8. Along with Utah and Montana, the Wolverines will play in Arizona, Texas, California, Kansas and Florida.
"We are playing various golf courses throughout the country with different types of grass and at different elevations," Nyhus said. "We expect to learn a great deal from our competition."
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach Cathy Nixon released her 2010-11 season schedule on Wednesday. The schedule includes home dates with four of the five Division I in-state rivals, a Preseason WNIT appearance and culminates with the hosting of the Great West Conference Championships.
"We are thrilled with the schedule this year," Nixon said. "To be able to start the season with a Preseason WNIT bid is a real tribute to our kids and what they have been able to accomplish in the past. We have a young team this year so it will be a challenge for us to be measured up against that level of competition on the road so early in the season but it will be a landmark tournament for us to see where we are at as a program and a university."
