SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake Bees' slim playoff hopes were seemingly fading by the minute on Tuesday night at Spring Mobile Ballpark, as the Fresno Grizzlies scored the first six runs of the game.
But the Bees rallied to win 7-6 after Terry Evans led off with a triple and later scored on a grounder by Alexi Amarista.
Salt Lake improved to 69-69 with the victory, leaving them three games behind division-leading Tacoma pending its late game Tuesday against Colorado Springs that featured two long rain delays. The Bees have just six games left in the season, however, so their postseason hopes are still remote.
Even so, Bees manager Bobby Mitchell is pleased with his troops.
"It was amazing, really," said Mitchell. "When you think about coming back like that this late in the season, it's really a credit to their character and their abilities."
Evans led the way for the Bees with four hits, two RBIs and three runs scored, while Mark Trumbo continued his torrid batting as well. Trumbo hit his franchise season record 34th homer in the seventh to pull the Bees to within one run.
"You never want to be down that much," said Trumbo of the Grizzlies' 6-0 lead. "But lately we've been swinging the bats well so it wasn't something we thought we couldn't do. We just knew we needed to do our job and we came back."
It was the second straight game where the Bees fell behind 4-0 after the top of the first inning and then came back to win.
Bees reliever Bobby Cassevah pitched the final two innings to earn the victory.
Salt Lake and Fresno will play the third game in their four-game set tonight. Eric Junge (5-2, 5.40 ERA) is scheduled to pitch against the Grizzlies' Waldis Joaquin (1-2, 3.86).
