Lofty Lake is one of the higher lakes in the Uintas, sitting near the treeline. The views on the way up are stunning. From the Ruth Lake parking area, the trail heads up for Ruth Lake. You pass by a picturesque stream and small pond. Take your time and enjoy the beauty of the area. At 0.75 miles you arrive at Ruth Lake. On the far side of the lake you come to a trail split. Stay right, heading up. The trail continues up and opens to a huge, rock slab. From this area, there are great views of Ruth Lake below. A rock-lined path takes off across the slab, and cairns lead you into the trees to the other side. At 1.8 miles you come to a junction; turn right. The trail switchbacks up to the ridgeline of Lofty Lake. Take a moment on the ridgeline to take in the beautiful view below you. You can see Scout Lake in front of you and Mirror Lake to the right. The trail drops down to Lofty Lake. The lake sits in a bowl between two mountain peaks. Kick back and relax on the grass for lunch. Before heading back down the mountain, I suggest you take the short hike over to view Cutthroat Lake. Hiking in the Uintas: Now that's "Life Elevated."

Directions: From Kamas, take the Mirror Lake Highway (state Route 150). Continue past Mirror Lake and drive 3.8 miles farther north to the Ruth Lake parking area.
