VOLLEYBALL: Utah State's volleyball team will hold an intra-squad scrimmage on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The scrimmage is open to the public. Following the scrimmage, Aggie players will be available for autographs.
Fifth-year head coach Grayson DuBose welcomes back all seven starters and 10 letterwinners from last year's team that went 15-14 on the season and finished seventh in the Western Athletic Conference with a 6-10 league mark.
Utah State returns five players who have earned all-WAC honors during their careers, as seniors Katie Astle, a middle blocker, setter Chelsea Fowles and libero Christine Morrill all earned second-team all-WAC honors in 2008, while junior opposite hitter Emily Kortsen was named to the league's all-freshman team that year. Junior outside hitter Liz McArthur was the only Aggie to be honored in 2009, as she earned second-team all-WAC honors.
Utah State, which is picked to finish fourth in the WAC this season, according to the league's coaches, opens the 2010 campaign with a pair of matches on Aug. 28 against UC Davis and Utah in a tournament hosted by the Utes. USU's first home match of the season will be against in-state rival Weber State on Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: Utah State junior forward Shantel Flanary was named the Western Athletic Conference offensive soccer player of the week on Monday, the second time in her collegiate career than Flanary has been selected for the award.
Flanary, who was named WAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, scored two goals in two matches last week as the Aggies started off the season with a 2-0 record with wins over in-state foes Weber State and Utah Valley. Flanary scored the first Utah State goal of the season in the Aggies' 2-1 win over Weber State on Friday at Rio Tinto Stadium. The 2009 WAC Offensive Player of the Year also scored a goal in USU's 4-0 shutout over Utah Valley in Logan on Sunday.
Flanary was one of only three players in the WAC to score two goals in the first week of play, including teammate sophomore Natalie Norris. Flanary is also first in the WAC in shots, averaging 5.50 shots per game. Utah State was the only team in the conference to win both of its matches to start the season.
