SALT LAKE CITY — Smith's Food and Drug has reached an agreement with city officials that will allow the grocer to put gas pumps at its Ninth and Ninth location.
The city is to issue a building permit within 30 days, according to the agreement signed this week by 3rd District Judge John Paul Kennedy.
Neighbors have fought the planned fuel center for nearly a decade, but city officials say a number of compromises made in the agreement will benefit the area.
"We felt that this arraignment was fair … and substantively different from the original proposal," said Lisa Harrison Smith, a spokeswoman for Mayor Ralph Becker.
Under the terms of the agreement, Smith's will consider adding charging outlets for electric cars and providing natural gas or biofuel at its pumps.
Smith's could also provide parking for employees of various Ninth and Ninth businesses, Smith said.
