SALT LAKE CITY — Two people were transported to the hospital in critical condition late Thursday after the scooter they were riding collided with a taxi cab.

The accident occurred at the intersection of 200 South and 200 West just after 11 p.m., when a westbound taxi cab attempting to turn south on 200 West struck a scooter with two riders traveling east through the intersection, Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Robin Snyder said.

Both of the scooter's occupants, a 25-year-old man and woman, were thrown from the scooter, Snyder said.

Neither of the scooter's riders was wearing a helmet, and both sustained serious head injuries. When officers arrived at the scene, the man was in "extremely critical" condition and the woman was in critical condition, Snyder said. They were transported by ambulance to area hospitals.

Snyder said no citations have been issued, though police took blood samples from both the taxi driver and the man driving the scooter to determine if either was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. She said the case will also change should either victim die of their injuries.
