FOOTBALL: Wednesday's two-a-day practice was a productive day for Utah State, going through a tough morning session on the practice field and a hard evening practice on the hot turf of Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium.
The Aggies were in full pads for the morning action before donning helmets, shoulder pads, practice jerseys and shorts for the later practice.
"This morning we saw a lot of the corrections that we worked on from the scrimmage film," USU head coach Gary Andersen said. "Our afternoon practice was an average practice. We have high expectations for every practice and our afternoon session wasn't quite where we need to be. We will just have to bounce back and come out tomorrow with a high quality, good spirited practice."
Andersen singled out senior punter and placekicker Peter Caldwell's kicking, both in Tuesday's scrimmage as well as in camp so far.
"Pete is kicking the ball really well, both field goals and punting," Andersen said. "He's kicking the ball solid and showing continued improvement."
The Aggies' head coach was also impressed with junior wide receiver Matt Austin and freshman defensive end Jason Fanaika and their efforts Wednesday. Additionally, Andersen announced that freshman Rashard Stewart, who has been practicing with the defense as a cornerback, is getting some action on the other side of the ball, focusing on offense for the next few days, after which the coaching staff will make an evaluation as to where to utilize Stewart.
ATHLETICS: The coach's luncheons, sponsored by the Big Blue Scholarship Fund, will start in Logan with the kickoff luncheon on Monday while the Salt Lake City Wasatch Front luncheons will start on Aug. 30.
The luncheons will be held throughout the season, opening with the Monday luncheon at noon at Romney Stadium. The other Logan luncheons on Monday will be held Sept. 13 and 27, Oct. 4 and 25, and Nov. 1, 8 and 29, all at The Copper Mill Restaurant, located at 55 N. Main in Logan.
