High school football: Bingham has a date with a sack
Miners are excited to get back on football field and hit QBs
SOUTH JORDAN — Sack a quarterback or go out with a cute girl?
For Bingham senior defensive end Moses Kaumatule, that's an easy call — you take the sack.
"It's the best feeling ever," Kaumatule says of bringing down a quarterback in the backfield. "It's better than anything. It's better than girls. Well, I don't get any girls — I don't know what that feels like — but I would think it's better.
"But sacks really are the best feeling — just sacking the quarterback and then helping him up."
Kaumatule is just one of several superstars on a Bingham football team that many believe is one of the most talented teams in state history, and the BYU commit can't wait to get on the football field again, starting Friday night at Viewmont.
And all kidding about girls aside, he really can't wait to start sacking quarterbacks again.
Kaumatule finished with 5.5 sacks last season, and he certainly could surpass that total this season.
His biggest concern, though, is just about his team.
Asked about how excited he was to play on such a talented team this fall, Kaumatule deflected all attention away from himself and his teammates and on to everyone else.
"It's amazing, especially playing with coach (Dave) Peck is my favorite part," he said. "I think he's the best coach in this nation. He knows what to do — he knows everything — and if we do what he says we're gonna win ballgames.
"He's a really great coach, and the supporting cast, as well — all our fans. It all comes together, and we all have a part in winning state. It's just we get a lot of credit — people put credit towards us."
TOP 25 WATCH: As was heavily expected, Kaumatule's Bingham team sits atop the preseason Deseret News Top 25 rankings.
The Miners are the defending 5A champs, return the majority of their title-winning team and enter Week 1 amidst huge expectations. Accordingly, it was easy to pencil them in at No. 1, and that's precisely where they sit heading in to the season.
Bingham's great football rival, Alta, is second, followed by 5A runner-up Davis at third.
Class 4A powers Timpview and Mountain Crest round out the Top 5.
