KEARNS — A skate park will open in Kearns Thursday, just south of the Kearns Recreation Center, 5660 S. Cougar Lane (4800 West).
The ribbon-cutting is at noon, with skate demos until dusk.
The long-awaited skate park is 24,000 square feet, with BMX features including a street plaza with gaps, multiple-height benches, transitions, stairs, handrails, ledges, step-ups and hips.
Two famous skate features have been replicated: the "Pier 7 Block" from San Francisco and the "Macba Gap," a site in Barcelona, Spain.
"The skate park will encourage our children to stay active and promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle," said Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon.
The $820,000 skate park was designed by Site Design Group Inc., of Carlsbad, Calif. It was built by CraCar Construction Inc., of West Valley City.
