MAPLETON, Utah County — The city's mandate to revamp its political sign ordinance takes place Thursday, Aug. 26, with a public hearing at a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall.
Officials agreed to revamp the city's political sign ordinance after agreeing to a settlement over First Amendment rights presented in a federal lawsuit by attorney Brian Barnard, representing a client identified only as "C. Johnson." Thursday's meeting is a continuance of a hearing in July, when the City Council referred the issue to the Planning Commission.
The city also agreed to pay Barnard $9,000 in attorney fees, while protesting that it never enforced its ordinance that restricted when political signs could be placed on private property.
