Ballpark named for veterans

SALEM, Utah County — For years, Downtown Ballpark was a place designated for youngsters to play, its history all but forgotten.

But when rumors began circulating that a new City Hall could be built there, a local soldier decided to dust off its past. In a letter to city officials, Kurt Davis explains how World War I and World War II veterans worked to get a grant from Utah County to get the land at 100 East and Center for the park, city recorder Jeff Nielsen said.

Recently, the City Council renamed the ballpark Veterans Memorial Park in memory of those soldiers. Building a City Hall there is unlikely, Nielsen said. The city recently refurbished its existing City Hall at 30 W. 100 South.
