Spain: Jellyfish attack

MADRID — A vast flotilla of small, virtually undetectable jellyfish have stung hundreds of people on Spanish beaches this week — a swimmer's nightmare that biologists say will become increasingly common due to climate change and overfishing.

The blobs attacked three areas near the eastern city of Elche along a famed stretch of white sand beaches known as the Costa Blanca. On Tuesday alone, 380 people were stung, compared to the usual four or five swimmers a day, said Juan Carlos Castellanos of the Elche city tourism department.

There was no sign of the jellyfish on Wednesday, but since Sunday, at least 700 people have been stung.

England: Cancer survival

LONDON — The rate at which women died from breast cancer dropped faster in Britain than in any other major European country during the last two decades, according to new research.

In previous studies, Britain has often ranked last among Western Europe for cancer survival rates. The U.K. does not spend as much money on new cancer drugs or other treatments as other countries, including France and Germany.

Haiti: Bridge rebuilt

PORT-AU-PRINCE — The United Nations says its peacekeepers in Haiti have repaired a main bridge linking the country to the Dominican Republic.

The 330-foot-long bridge is a key link between Haiti's northern region and the Dominican Republic. The span had been in poor condition for some time, and its supporting pillars had lost stability.

Guatemala: Warrants

GUATEMALA CITY — A Guatemalan court has issued arrest warrants for a former interior minister and a top police official for allegedly participating in the killing of inmates during a prison escape and uprising, a court employee said Wednesday.

Nineteen people are named in the warrants, including former Interior Minister Carlos Vielmann and former National Police Director Erwin Sperissen, according to the court employee, who was not authorized to be quoted by name. Both men are believed to have left Guatemala.

All of the officials sought are from the 2004-08 administration of then-President Oscar Berger.
