Israel: Whistle-blowers

JERUSALEM — An Israeli nuclear whistle-blower who spent 18 years behind bars was released from jail Sunday after serving an additional three months for violating his release terms.

Mordechai Vanunu was a technician at Israel's top-secret nuclear reactor next to the desert town of Dimona. In 1986 he carried out of the country hundreds of pictures he took of the interior of the reactor and gave them to the London Sunday Times.

Experts concluded from his information and pictures that Israel had hundreds of nuclear bombs.

Chile: Trapped miners

SANTIAGO — Rescuers planned Sunday to lower sound-detection equipment trying to locate nearly three dozen workers trapped in a northern Chilean gold and copper mine.

Listening devices would be lowered through holes drilled down into the mine in hopes of making contact with the workers, who were trapped Thursday when a tunnel collapsed, said Rodrigo Jofre, who represents families of the 33 trapped miners.

The equipment should reach the bottom of the San Jose mine by Monday morning, rescue worker Luis Salazar said.

Poland: Flood toll

WARSAW — The death toll in flooding in central Europe rose to 11 as Poland's interior minister said Sunday that two more people had died in the southwestern region of the country.

The flooding has struck an area near the borders of Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic.

Mexico: Suspensions

MEXICO CITY — Four federal police commanders have been suspended from their posts in a violent Mexican border city following allegations from subordinates that they have links to drug traffickers.

The action by the Public Safety Department comes just hours after 200 federal police officers detained one of their superiors at gunpoint, alleging that he had connections to drug cartels and had participated in kidnappings, killings and extortion.

Iran: Submarines

TEHRAN — Iran's state media say the country's navy has taken charge of four new Iranian-built submarines as part of Tehran's efforts to upgrade its defense capabilities.
