Public invited to Ramadan opening

The Islamic Society of Greater Salt Lake is inviting the public to attend a "Ramadan Iftaar" (opening of the fast) on Saturday Aug. 14, 8 p.m.-9:45 p.m. at Khadeeja Mosque, 1019 W. Parkway Ave. (2455 South), West Valley City.

Events will begin with a social, then a call to prayer and opening of the fast, with light refreshments and drink. Dinner will be served buffet-style and with community outdoor seating, so comfortable attire, such as slacks, are recommended.

During Ramadan, the congregation has optional daily additional late-night prayers (Taraweeh) after the regular night prayers. During the month, over one chapter of the Islamic Holy Book is recited in Arabic each night in congregational prayer.

Guests are welcome to observe the services, and the prayers last over one hour without any breaks at approximately 9:53 p.m.

New pastor named to Lutheran church

Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 2500 E. 3900 South, has named the Rev. Geoffrey Beebe as its new pastor.

He begins his duties this month and previously served in Wyoming, Minn., where was pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church from February 1989 to August 2009.

A 1981 graduate of Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Pastor Beebe first served as an Associate Pastor at Augustana Lutheran Church in W. St. Paul, Minn., from 1981-1989. His wife, Melissa, is a registered nurse in the field of home care. They have three young adult children who will be remaining in Minnesota.

Pastor Beebe and his wife are both downhill skiers, having skied often in Jackson Hole, Wyo. They are both looking forward to the mountain skiing in the Salt Lake area. He is a basketball fan and player who considers the Utah Jazz to be a considerable upgrade from his often losing hometown Minnesota Timberwolves.

Our Saviour's Lutheran Church is a member congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and invites the community to meet Pastor Beebe and visit the congregation.

Worship services are each Sunday at 8:45 a.m. and 11 a.m., with Sunday School, adult education and confirmation ministry for youth all beginning on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m.

Power, money to be discussed at church

"Ethics Reform and the Capitol Crossroads of Power, Money, Ambition, and Opportunity" will be the Sunday presentation at the First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City, 569 E. 1300 South.

David Irvine, co-author of the legislative ethics reform initiative, former Davis County Republican Party Chairman, four-term member of the Utah House of Representatives, and former Commissioner on the Utah Public Service Commission, will deliver an address at 10 a.m.

"Living the Promise" will be the Sunday, Aug. 8, 10:30 a.m., sermon at Provo Community Church, 175 N. University, Provo.

Catholic pilgrimage heading to Mexico

The Most Rev. John C. Wester, Catholic bishop of Salt Lake, will lead a pilgrimage Oct. 10-15 to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, the Tula Pyramids, Querétaro, Morelia, Guadalajara and the Tequila Express.

Women's Bible class to study Isaiah

A Bible Study Fellowship Day Women's Class is accepting registration for its study of Isaiah, scheduled to begin in September at Holladay Baptist Church, 2780 E. 3900 South, on Wednesdays, from 9:10 to 11 a.m.

The fellowship is an interdenominational, international Bible study of nearly 250,000 men and women worldwide, who come together in weekly classes.
