LAYTON — The first of two bridges at the south Layton interchange project on I-15 will be placed Saturday night.
The Utah Department of Transportation and the project contractor, Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction, will move the span into place beginning at 11 p.m. Southbound lanes of the interstate will be closed from 11 p.m. Saturday until 5 a.m. Sunday at the Hill Field Road Interchange, Exit 331, which is one mile north of the interchange project. The closure will occur in several steps, beginning at 7 p.m., with complete closure by 11 p.m.
The main bridge spans have been constructed away from the interchange site. During the past month, workers have been removing excess soil from under the bridge structures, which were built atop the large earthen fills constructed for the new Layton Parkway.
Crews Saturday night will use large hydraulic rams to push the bridge span out over the closed southbound interstate lanes and connect it to the support structures.
The public may view the bridge placement from a fenced area northwest of the old Fort Lane Shopping Center, accessed from both Gentile Street and Fort Lane.
A second bridge will be placed over the northbound lanes later this month.
The Layton Parkway will connect Fort Lane on the east side of I-15 with Flint Street on the west side via a still-to-be-constructed bridge over the freight and commuter railroad corridor.
