Payson man charged with killing father also faces charges of illegal possession of firearms
SALT LAKE CITY — A Payson man charged last week with killing his father is now facing additional charges in federal court.
Roger Kay Mortensen, 48, faces one count of being a felon in possession of firearms, according to charges filed Thursday in U.S. District Court. In searching Mortensen's home last week, police found two revolvers, four rifles and a shotgun, according to the federal charges.
A search of court records shows Mortensen has at least one felony theft conviction from the mid-1990s.
Mortensen declined to comment on the charges Thursday afternoon.
Last week, Mortensen and his wife, 34-year-old Pamela Mortensen, were indicted by a state grand jury on charges of murder in the death of retired BYU professor Kay Mortensen.
Rodger Kay Mortensen remained in custody this week, his bail set at $500,000 cash only.
His next court appearance is set for Aug. 17.
