SALT LAKE CITY — Local growers visited Salt Lake County Council Tuesday to give a positive update on how well the urban farming initiative is going.

The county's program coordinates the leasing of publicly-owned lands lying fallow to local farmers who grow fruits and vegetables.

"Farming is a productive use of the land," said councilman Jim Bradley.

Five parcels have been leased to commercial farmers. Products are sold at the Salt Lake Farmers Market and to local restaurants.

"We live five minutes from the piece of land. We love it," said grower Thayne Tagge, of Holladay.
