NFL: Former BYU star John Beck traded from Ravens to Redskins

John Beck's National Football League career took another turn Monday, when he was traded from the Baltimore Ravens to the Washington Redskins.

Instead of battling Troy Smith for the backup job behind Joe Flacco in Baltimore, the former Cougar quarterback finds himself in Washington, D.C., where he is the fifth QB on the Redskins' roster.

With Donovan McNabb — the former Philadelphia Eagle who was acquired by Washington during the offseason — and Rex Grossman sitting atop the depth chart, Beck will fight with two other hopefuls, Colt Brennan and Richard Bartel.

During his NFL coaching career, Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan typically hasn't had more than two quarterbacks on the roster. To this point, Brennan and Bartel have been splitting reps during training camp.

Beck, who's in his fourth NFL season, will be joining his third team. He was picked in the second round of the 2007 draft by the Miami Dolphins and started four games as a rookie. He didn't play in 2008 with the Dolphins and was signed by Baltimore in 2009. Beck did not play in any games last season.

In his NFL career, Beck has completed 60 of 107 passes for 559 yards, with one touchdown and three interceptions.

Beck was a second-round draft choice in 2007, and the 40th overall pick — the fourth quarterback taken that year.

The Ravens traded the 28-year-old Beck to Washington for cornerback Doug Dutch.

Dutch, a Michigan product who is in his second season in the NFL, spent time on the Redskins' practice squad in 2009. He will add depth at cornerback for Baltimore, which lost Domonique Foxworth to a season-ending knee injury.
