SANTAQUIN, Utah County — Computers at City Hall and the police station soon may be talking to each other via fiber optic cable rather than wireless.
That will speed up the connection and remove weather-related issues, city manager Ben Reeves said. However, rather than bury the cable, the city wants to attach it to seven Rocky Mountain Power poles. The installation would cost roughly $13,000, though the power company wouldn't charge for the cable to be there, Reeves said. Burying the cable would be more expensive, he said.
A spokeswoman for the power company confirmed that discussions with Santaquin are in progress.
The city's servers are in the police station, a relatively new and secure building, while the Internet connection is at City Hall, a former school building a few blocks away.
"This will make it more reliable," Reeves said.
