Utah Scout checks in from Jamboree

FORT A.P. HILL, Va. — Jamboree started on July 26, but Troop 603 went a week early to tour New Jersey, New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania we went to tons of monuments and memorials, the only place we regret not going to is the Hershey Chocolate Factory. Sunday at D.C. was very memorable. About 10 troops — 400 Scouts — had a multireligion devotional at Arlington Cemetery where several dignitaries spoke about how Scouting has had a great influence on them and how it can influence us.

After the devotional, we were given a letter from our parents and we scattered around the cemetery to read them in a quiet peaceful place. Although most boys won't admit it, we all cried or had a warm heart.

In our travels we have had the opportunity to try many new foods. One especially memorable dinner was at the Plain and Fancy in the tourist part of an Amish community.

When we finally arrived at Jamboree, we settled down and made camp. The next day we explored the area and started trading patches, pins and cards. Some major things we found were Merit Badge Midway, a field full of tents where Scouts can earn more than 100 badges. At another place called Technology Quest, Scouts were able to try their hand at making robots, trying out flight simulations and could even meet an astronaut. Another unique place is the Aquatic Center, where Scouts can work on fishing, rowing and even scuba diving. We woke up at 6 a.m. the next day to get ready for the arena show. The show featured celebrities and dignitaries such as Burton Roberts, a contestant on "Survivor"; Sgt. Slaughter, a former professional wrestler; and Miss America.

We are all having a great time, and you should be happy to know that we have showers. On behalf of all the Utah troops, see you soon.
