SOUTH SALT LAKE — The parents of a 5-year-old girl who police say died of suspicious circumstances Tuesday have been arrested.
Police and emergency medical personnel were called to the South Salt Lake couple's home at 726 W. Timber Creek Way (3875 South) just before 1 p.m. on a report of a 5-year-old in full arrest. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers observed evidence of trauma to the girl's body and began an investigation. The girl's parents, Angeles Cadillo-Castro, 31, and Gerardo Jesus Espindola-Olvera, 36, were arrested about 10 p.m. and booked into Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of child abuse. Bail was set at $50,000.
"At this point the death is being treated as suspicious," South Salt Lake Police Chief Chris Snyder said. "Any additional charges will depend on the autopsy report and the district attorney's office."
A 2-month-old child who was also in the home was removed and taken into Utah Division of Child and Family Services custody. Snyder said it is unknown whether the 2-month-old had any injuries.
