SALT LAKE CITY — Wayward fireworks at the annual Liberty Park show shot into the audience and nearby homes Saturday evening, causing minor injuries to 10 people.
Officials are still investigating the incident but believe a bank of 10 fireworks were being held in a type of stand waiting to be set off. One of the fireworks was lit and the other nine either tipped over or became loose and shot into the audience, Salt Lake Fire spokesman Scott Freitag said.
Ten people received minor burn injuries. Two were transported to nearby hospitals.
Fire investigators are working with police to determine how the incident happened, Freitag said.
Dispatchers initially reported a small fire in the area, possibly started by one of the wayward fireworks, but officials were unable to confirm. Two houses were hit by the fireworks, but there was no damage, Freitag said.
