KEARNS — A Kearns family was displaced from their home Sunday after a barbecue ignited the side of their house and spread into the attic.
Fire crews arrived on the scene just after 6:30 p.m. to find heavy smoke and flames on the backside of the home extending into the attic.
The family had been cooking on their barbecue and evacuated after the fire consumed the barbecue, fueled by its propane tank, Unified Fire Authority Capt. Clint Smith said.
Fire crews from West Jordan, UFA and West Valley City responded and doused flames within 15 minutes. Officials estimate the fire caused about $50,000 in damage.
Red Cross will be helping the family find a place to stay temporarily.
