More important news

Come on, Deseret News. I wonder who selects the articles that you publish in your paper. Your front-page lead story (July 13) was about installing new parking meters in Salt Lake. While interesting, there must be more important news that your readers should know.

For example, Erskine Bowles, the person President Barack Obama recently chose to co-chair a commission to assess the severity of our national debt, made an important statement on Monday. Your paper didn't even mention it. He stated that a preliminary assessment of the severity of our national debt (in trillions and growing) was that if we did not restore fiscal sanity at the national level, the country would inevitably go broke. Isn't that something that a responsible paper should pass on to the public?

You also did not mention that HB1388 was quietly passed by Congress this week. This bill authorized the expenditure of $20.3 million for transporting, feeding, housing, etc., Palestinians who would be authorized to come to this country as refugees — some being supporters of Hamas. Is that not an important story also — especially in view of our debt crisis? I would suspect that both of these stories that you never mentioned merit more attention than your front page parking meter story.
