There are so many beautiful hikes in the Uintas, it's hard to decide which trail to choose. Island Lake is a jewel in this vast wilderness and offers pure hiking pleasure. At the trailhead, find the trail post for Long and Island lakes. At 1/4 mile, you will see a sign for Cliff Lake; stay on the main trail heading west. The trail gently climbs, with views of Crystal Lake through the trees. After passing a few ponds, you arrive at the highest point on this hike, at 1.3 miles. The trail heads down to a junction for Weir Lake; stay right for Long Lake. You arrive at Long Lake at 2.5 miles and cross a footbridge at the far end. The trail wanders up and down and drops to the lowest point just before the Duck Lake junction. At the junction, stay right and continue up switchbacks for Island Lake. Island Lake stays hidden to the bitter end, and the view stimulates your senses. Wander around the lake, relax and immerse yourself in pure beauty. Duck, Pot and Weir lakes are worth the time to add a loop to this hike. On your return from Island Lake, take the junction to Duck Lake. This loop will add another 1.6 miles to your hike. Hiking in beauty — what a great way to spend your day.
