John Florez, in his column Monday, July 12, said, "Utah and the U.S. need immigrants' strength." True, and it always has been. We are all immigrants. But that statement ignores the problem we are experiencing in our country — the trashing of the rule of law by our federal government and illegal, undocumented immigrants.
Those Greeks, Mexicans, Irish, Italians, Germans and Chinese he mentions came here lawfully. They have assimilated into the American society They have real Social Security numbers, proper documentation, pay taxes, etc. They love America and don't run Mexican flags above American flags as was the case in a Montebello, Calif., high school recently. They don't overrun the hospital emergency rooms expecting free care. They add their culture to that of others in the United States and become a blended, sharing part of our culture that makes this a better country. And, John, even if only one extra crime is the result of an illegal immigrant, it's one too many. I believe I've seen more than just one.
And, John, don't threaten us with our police services being so busy dealing with illegal immigration that true crimes will overwhelm us.
The real problem is we are losing the rule of law in this country. We are losing freedom and you don't see it.
