SALT LAKE CITY — Disabled Utahns may be eligible to apply for a monthly General Assistance payment if they meet the criteria and make their application during a three-day window July 13 to 15.

Due to budget difficulties, the state Department of Workforce Services closed enrollment for the program in January, and the three-day period is the only time in the foreseeable future that applications will be taken.

The program provides physically or mentally disabled adults — single or married — without dependent children a monthly check of $261 during the time period while their application for federal disability benefits is being processed. Advocates for the poor worry that people who are eligible won't learn about the three-day enrollment period in time to participate, as many are homeless and have significant mobility and mental-health problems.

To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 or emancipated, able to verify a physical or mental health impairment that prevents all basic work activities for at least 60 days and must not be receiving unemployment benefits or Social Security disability payments.

Application can be made online at jobs.utah.gov or at any Department of Workforce Services Employment Center.
