SALT LAKE CITY — North Salt Lake City Attorney David Michael Nielson was charged Friday with attempting to buy drugs.
Nielson, 54, was arrested June 27 after police say he tried to buy $100 worth of cocaine from an undercover officer.
Police were conducting an undercover drug operation near the Gateway Mall at 280 W. 200 South when Nielson approached the officer and asked to buy the drugs, according to charging documents filed Friday in 3rd District Court. Police say they arrested 18 people during the sting.
Nielson reportedly failed to tell his employers at City Hall that he had been arrested but told officials he would resign after the news broke Wednesday.
Nielson also worked as a contract attorney for West Bountiful City.
He has been suspended from that position, and his status with both cities will be officially determined during city council meetings next week.
Nielson was charged with attempted possession or use of a controlled substance, a third-degree felony.
