CENTERVILLE — Firefighters faced strong afternoon winds as they worked to control a small brush fire in the mountains above Centerville.

Crews reached the fire at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, said South Davis Metro Fire Agency Deputy Chief Jeff Bassett, on the scene of the blaze above 1800 North.

By Thursday night the fire had spread to 30 acres, moving from grass to oak brush in the Rick's Creek area. Several crews responded, including fire agencies from Layton, Farmington, Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service.

Fire crews also extinguished a small brush fire in Butterfield Canyon above Herriman in Salt Lake County.

Firefighters responded to the scene about 2 p.m. Thursday, and about an hour later they had controlled the blaze, said Unified Fire Authority Capt. Clint Smith.

The fire was started by a lightning strike, and Smith estimated it burned about one-quarter to one-half of an acre.

No structures were threatened by either fire, officials said.
