NEW FRIDAY

DESPICABLE ME — ★★½ There are some genuine laughs in this animated feature, even if much of the material is predictable. Running time: 95 minutes; PG (violence, vulgarity, slurs)

ONDINE — ★★ This disappointing fable suddenly turns dark and nasty in its final third. Colin Farrell stars. Running time: 103 minutes; PG-13 (profanity, violence, brief partial nudity, brief sex)

PREDATORS — ★★ One scene turns this dumb fun movie into simply a dumb one. Adrien Brody stars. Running time: 106 minutes; R (violence, gore, profanity, brief drugs, slurs)

WINTER'S BONE — ★★★ Newcomer Jennifer Lawrence keeps our interest throughout this bleak Ozarks thriller. Running time: 100 minutes; R (violence, profanity, drugs, slurs)

NEW WEDNESDAY

THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE — Nicolas Cage trains Jay Baruchel in this live-action fantasy comedy, loosely based on the classic Disney cartoon. To be reviewed when it opens next week; running time: 107 minutes; PG (violence, vulgarity, slurs)

RE-RELEASE

METROPOLIS — ★★★★ — A fuller, richer version of the 1927 film — no longer a stunning comic book but a masterpiece of excess. Black and white; running time: 149 minutes; not rated, probable PG (disturbing images) — Ty Burr, The Boston Globe
