SANTAQUIN, Utah County — A high-speed chase between the Utah Highway Patrol and a fleeing suspect ended in a two car accident Monday morning, sending two people to the hospital.
About 5:30 a.m., a UHP trooper attempted to make a routine traffic stop near Springville, said UHP spokesman Cameron Roden.
"He went to pull it over, the driver would not stop," Roden said.
The ensuing chase reached speeds of 100 mph. The trooper called for assistance, and another police agency set up tire spikes near Santaquin, Roden said. The driver swerved in an attempt to miss the spikes but still clipped them. The vehicle went into the median and rolled, ejecting the driver, Roden said.
The vehicle carried on into northbound traffic and struck a second vehicle. The driver of the fleeing car was taken by medical helicopter to a local hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the second car was taken by ambulance to a hospital in critical condition, Roden said.
Names of the fleeing man and the second injured person were not immediately released Monday morning. Roden said he did not know why the driver was fleeing from troopers.
