SALT LAKE CITY — While the world's best cyclists started a little race in Europe, many of Utah's best competed for state time trial championships in a race against the clock.
Norm Bryner defended his Cat 1-2 state title with a blistering fast time of 36:49 over the 30-kilometer course from the International Center near the Salt Lake City International Airport to Saltair and back. Bryner, riding for Mi Doule/Barbacoa, used a time that was just three seconds faster than Zach Tittensor (Canyon Bicycles Draper) but 50 seconds faster than third place finisher Evan Hyde (Cole Sport) to cement his spot as Utah's fastest cyclist against the clock.
Nicole Evans (Millcreek Bicycles) laid down a time of 40:19 over the same 30k course to win the women's Cat 1-2-3 state championship. Her time easily beat that of Karen Appleby-Krieg (Idaho Cycling Enthusiasts) and Stephanie Skoreyko (Park City Iron Man) with Breanne Nalder (Ski Utah) less than a second away from the podium.
In the men's Cat 3 race, Louis Reil (Canyon Bicycles Draper) won the title with a time of 38:08, ahead of Weston Woodward's 38:43 and Nate Pack's 38:51.
Megan Hill won the women's 20k Cat 4 race with a time of 30:39 while Brian Cadman is the men's Cat 4 winner at 40:15.
Justin Allen won the men's Cat 5 race with a time of 28:12 over the 20k course.
