SANTAQUIN — Two teens were killed Saturday morning when their car hit a guardrail on I-15 near Santaquin.
The teens, ages 18 and 17, were traveling north near Milepost 243 when, about 5:45 a.m., the car drifted off the left side of the road and hit the end of a metal guardrail, said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Todd Johnson.
The guardrail penetrated the car, the impact killing the two teens in the front seats and injuring a 60-year-old man in the back seat, according to a Utah Highway Patrol report.
The teens, Darrin James Elwood, 18, and Tyler Jordan Blais, 17, were on their way to Kearns from southern Utah. The injured man, 60-year-old William Giodowski, of Sandy, was apparently a hitchhiker who was picked up in southern Utah, according to the report.
All northbound lanes were closed for about an hour and a half, and a medical helicopter flew the injured man to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo.
Police suspect the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. He apparently was wearing his seatbelt, while the two passengers were not.
