PROVO — Bruce C. Barrett, manager of the Bureau of Reclamation's Provo Area Office since 1992, retired July 2.
Barrett started out as a civil engineer with the office's planning division in 1980 and later became a supervising general engineer for the Salt Lake Regional Office. In 1991, he was promoted to program manager for Provo. He became its area manager in 1994 and has been in that position for 16 years.
During his tenure, he has overseen 29 large dams that make up 16 major water projects within the jurisdiction of the Provo office.
Additionally, he has been responsible for the operation and maintenance of 60 miles of tunnels, 175 miles of pipelines, seven power plants, 13 pumping stations and 263 miles of canals.
His achievements include being named the agency's regional engineer in 1992 and receiving a superior service award in 2005. Most notable, a bureau news release said, was the completion of the Jordanelle Dam and Reservoir in 1992 and the response and repair of the A.V. Watkins Dam north of Ogden in 2006, an effort for which he was recognized by the Department of Interior in 2007.
