In the "My View" by Darcy Goddard (June 20), people are asked to feel sorry for all the "indigent" (illegal immigrants, drug users, people who refuse to work) people who don't get a fair trial in "Utah's constitutionally inadequate criminal defense system." She states that the Constitution requires all people a fair trial regardless of their ability to pay. She goes on say the public defenders are overloaded with cases and the state of Utah, instead of the counties, should be responsible for their defense.
What she doesn't ask is who will be paying for "indigents' " public defenders? Will it be the ACLU or will it be the hard-working taxpayers? If you said the latter you'd be absolutely correct. Goddard and the ACLU are representative of what's wrong with America and the left-leaning liberals. They believe everyone should shoulder responsibility for all people (read wealth distribution).
While no one with a conscience would like to see people who are innocent and down on their luck have to come up with legal representation on their own, they, in fact, are in the minority. Goddard and the ACLU would have us believe the police have nothing better to do than arrest innocent people.
