PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — One put himself near the top of the leaderboard, while the other had a tough time in his first U.S. Open appearance.
It was a different day for Utah's two participants in the U.S. Open at the Pebble Beach Golf Club at Monterey, Calif. Sandy's Mike Weir posted a 1-under 70 and stands in a tie for fourth place after the opening round. However, things didn't go so well for Farmington's Daniel Summerhays, who shot an 8-over 79 and is in danger of missing the cut in a tie for 135th place.
Weir had six birdies on the day to go with five bogeys. He made a pair of each on the first nine to make the turn at even. He went 1-over with a bogey at 10, then ran off four birdies in five holes to move to the top of the leaderboard at 3-under par.
His birdie at No. 16 came on a flop shot from 25 feet, but he bogeyed the final two holes to finish at 70.
"That was a bonus," Weir said about his chip. "I was hoping to hit a great shot like I did there. I hit a great one, landed where I wanted and just happened to hit the flag." Weir was tied for the lead for much of the day, before Shaun Micheel, Paul Casey and Brendan De jonge came in with their 69s.
Summerhays, who teed off on No. 10, got off to a horrible start with bogeys at 10 and 11 and a double bogey at No. 12. Another double bogey at No. 17 and a bogey at No. 18 gave Summerhays a 43 on his opening nine.
Two more bogeys at 1 and 2 put Summerhays at 9-over par before he made his only birdies of the day at 6 and 7.
Summerhays tees off at 9:50 a.m. MT Friday, while Weir goes off at 2:14 p.m.
