Salt Lake Bees can't finish late-inning rally

SALT LAKE CITY — One night after giving up four runs in the ninth inning to lose to the Las Vegas 51s, the Salt Lake Bees were looking for some payback.

It didn't happen.

The Bees, despite loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, couldn't put together the needed rally. Las Vegas edged the Bees 6-4 in the third game of a four-game set on Wednesday night at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

"We really didn't hit tonight, especially with men on base," said Bees manager Bobby Mitchell.

The Bees were down 6-3 entering their half of the eighth when things got interesting. Mark Trumbo led off with a walk, Cory Aldridge singled — his third hit of the game — and Terry Evans walked to load the bases with no outs. That put Nick Gorneault to the plate representing the go-ahead run.

But Gorneault grounded into a double play and — despite being in prime position to score multiple runs — only a single run crossed the plate. It was the second time in the game that the Bees managed just one run after loading the bases with no outs.

"You are not going to win too many ball games when you let them off the hook like that," said Mitchell.

Aldridge had a strong game in the losing cause, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. As a team, however, the Bees bats were quiet, as they had just four hits on the night.

BEES WAX: The parent L.A. Angels of Anaheim announced Wednesday that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Sean O'Sullivan from Salt Lake. O'Sullivan, 23, has appeared in 13 games (all starts) for the Bees in 2010, owning a 5-4 record with a 4.91 ERA. ... Jeff Mathis, on injury rehab for the Angels, caught his 242nd game in a Salt Lake uniform on Wednesday night before being called up to rejoin the parent club. That's the most appearances ever behind the plate in franchise history. Damian Miller was the previous leader with 241 games caught.
