WEST JORDAN — A domestic dispute early Saturday left one woman in the hospital in critical condition with several stab wounds and her husband booked into jail.

Police say the couple had been arguing in their home near 3600 West and 7900 South around 2:30 a.m. when the 28-year-old husband stabbed his wife multiple times in the chest, arms and torso.

The victim's 18-year-old daughter — the husband's stepdaughter — heard a commotion and came into the room, West Jordan Police Sgt. Drew Sanders said. The man stopped stabbing his wife and turned to the girl, stabbing her once before leaving the house on foot, police say.

The 40-year-old woman was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray in critical but stable condition.

"It's still kind of touch and go as to whether she'll make it," Sanders said.

Her daughter was less seriously injured and is expected to recover.

Police searched for hours and eventually located the victim's husband, Ricardo L. Pineda-Luevano. He was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on investigation of attempted homicide and aggravated assault.

Police said they don't know what the couple had been arguing about.
