BYU sports: Mindy McClurkin and Robbie Fillmore both earn All-American honors
EUGENE, Ore. — Mindy McClurkin capped off her career as one of the best all-around women track and field athletes of all-time at BYU, earning an All-America citation in the long jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Saturday.
Competing in her final event as a Cougar, McClurkin jumped a distance of 6.53 meters, sitting the senior in her highest finish ever at nationals — third place — and garnering her team six points in the team standings.
The six points were the only scored by the women's team at the championships and were good enough to give BYU a 36th-place finish, tied with Buffalo-SUNY, Louisville, Texas Tech and Oral Roberts.
The BYU men's team ended the weekend earning one point from Richard Nelson's performance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase yesterday, leaving the Cougars tied for 69th place overall.
Junior Leif Arrhenius was the final Cougar to compete in the championships, competing in the shot put. Arrhenius' longest throw of 18.23 meters was good enough for 10th place overall but just short of qualifying for All-America for the third time in his career.
BYU GOLFER HONORED: Postseason honors continue to pour in for Cougar golfer Robbie Fillmore.
The senior has been named All-America honorable Mention by the Golf Coaches Association of America after a he finished in a tie for 18th at the NCAA Championships.
"It's really great to be honored," said Fillmore. "I had a lot of fun this season, and the NCAA Championships was a great way to finish my BYU career. I'm grateful for the opportunity I had to play here."
Fillmore was BYU's top golfer all season and ranked second in the Mountain West Conference in stroke average at 70.97. He received an invitation to the NCAA Championships after finishing third at the NCAA Southeast Regional. In addition to his All-America nod, Fillmore was also named All-MWC and PING All-West Region. He finished the year ranked No. 52 in the nation.
This season, the Salt Lake City, Utah, native posted the first tournament victory of his career at the Fresno State Lexus Classic, beating out 99 other golfers for a one-shot victory on the first playoff hole. Fillmore had five other top-5 finishes and finished nine of 12 events at even par or under. He achieved a low round of 65 at the Pacific Invitational and led the Cougars in eight tournaments overall, including seven of the last eight team events of the year.
