HERRIMAN — Raquel DeLuca, a lifelong Herriman resident and former councilwoman, will fill the vacant City Council seat.
DeLuca replaces Milton "Mick" Shannon, who resigned May 6 after criminal charges were filed against him. Shannon faces a charge of criminal mischief after police say he slashed the tires and scratched the truck of a man he accused of having an affair with his wife.
DeLuca was instrumental in the south valley's city incorporation and served on the City Council from 1999-2007. She was voted out of office during the November 2007 elections, losing her seat to Matt Robinson.
Deluca, chairwoman of the city's planning and zoning committee, was one of 17 people who applied for the spot. The vote for DeLuca — who becomes the only woman on the council — was unanimous.
"I am humbled by and appreciative of the level of confidence being shown by this vote," DeLuca said in a statement. "The ability of the council to be unified in this decision shows (its) intent to honor the past while embracing the future. I vow to use my experience to help in this effort."
DeLuca will fill the remainder of Shannon's term, which runs through 2011.
