BYU football: Former Cougar Shiloah Te'o to join Oregon State squad

A former BYU safety is enrolling at Oregon State.

Shiloah Te'o, who was dismissed from the Cougar football program last fall for breaking team rules, will join the Beavers' team this summer, according to multiple media outlets in Oregon.

Te'o played in the first five games last season before BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall learned that Te'o had been arrested for a DUI in August. Te'o was charged Sept. 18 with driving under the influence from the August arrest.

At the time of Te'o's dismissal, Mendenhall explained that he found out about the charge in the hours after a BYU victory over Utah State on Oct. 2. Mendenhall dismissed Te'o from the team a few days later.

Due to NCAA transfer rules, Te'o, a 5-foot-11, 212 Kahuku High (Hawaii) product, will not be eligible to play until 2011. As it turns out, his first collegiate game at OSU could be against the Cougars, as BYU and Oregon State are scheduled to play each other on Sept. 3, 2011, in Corvallis, Ore.

In two seasons at BYU, Te'o appeared in 16 games, recording 10 tackles, one tackle-for-loss and one fumble recovery. He is the cousin of Cougar linebacker Malosi Te'o.
