Golf: 8 advance to quarterfinals in senior match play event

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Rick Groendyke, a 53-year-old from South Jordan, heads a group of eight golfers who survived two rounds and moved into the quarterfinals at the UGA Senior Match Play golf tournament Wednesday at Talons Cove Golf Course.

Groendyke, the No. 32 seed, knocked off defending champion and No. 1 seed Ben Maddox 3 and 2, then beat Gordon Bowen 1 up in the second round.

He is joined by Patrick Murphy, Greg Stimpson, Bill Pizza, Kurt Bernhisel, Steve Borget, Todd Barker and Ruben Escobedo in the quarterfinals, which begin at 8 a.m. Thursday, followed by semifinals Thursday afternoon. Borget, a former State Amateur champion, had two eagles, including a hole-in-one in his 3 and 2 win over Brent Bryson.
