SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Transit Authority will not run any buses or trains Monday because of the Memorial Day holiday.
On past Memorial Days, UTA operated buses and TRAX on the Sunday schedule, with no FrontRunner service. This year, however, UTA faces a revenue shortfall in the millions. The bulk of UTA's operating budget comes from a portion of the sales tax in the six counties in which it operates. With the recession, fewer Utahns are spending money.
Last fall, UTA accountants began looking for ways to save $6 million, and cutting back holiday service was proposed. The transit authority's board of trustees approved the cost-saving measure in December.
Regular UTA bus and train service will resume Tuesday, UTA spokesman Gerry Carpenter said.
